Sophie Legras présentera un séminaire intitulé : Commute, work, sleep : urban form and pollution exposure.
Résumé / abstract : This paper studies how urban form affects residents’ exposure to transport-related pollution. Drawing on Denant-Boemont et al. (2018)’s theoretical model of residential choice, we introduce the impact of the residential equilibrium on residents’ exposure to pollution. Besides residential exposure, the usual approach to capture how people are affected by pollution, we also consider that residents may be exposed to pollution during commuting and at their place of work. We study in a first step a pre-pandemic world in which commuting to work is the general rule. We analyze how the equilibrium urban form impacts the different types of pollution exposures, both individually and collectively. Then, we address a post pandemic world, in which working from home is more widespread. Consequently, less people drive to work, affecting the three types of exposures. Results contribute to the on-going debate about the desirable urban form.
